On this day, January 19,2021: It was one of the most thrilling Test series of the decade reached a fitting end when India won it 2-1 in the last few overs on the last day of the last Test while chasing 328 in Brisbane, where Australia had not lost in 32 years. Australia scored 369 runs in the first innings and in reply to that, India were bowled out for 336 in the second innings giving away a lead of 33. In the third innings Australia were bowled out for 294 and set a mammoth target of 328 for India to chase and it looked an uphill task. India needed more than 300 runs on the final day and it was a battle between whether they would go for the win or settle for a draw and India did the unthinkable.
India chased down the target in the final day as they made 329/7 and won the match by three wickets. Rishabh Pant was one of the star who took them home with 89 runs. Cheteshwar Pujara also stayed at the crease over five hours and took about a dozen body blows for his fifty. While the platform was set by Shubman Gill whose 91 gave India a great platform.
Mohammed Siraj who was playing his third Test took five wickets. It was a very good end to the series for India who won the series without their best batter, Virat Kohli, after the first Test, and lost players to injury at a rate of knots through the tour, including all their main bowlers.
India achieved this feat in Brisbane with a second string side and came up trumps against one of Australia’s best bowling attacks of all time in Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon. Also Read | India announces squads for ODI, T20I series against Australia Women
