
On this day, July 12, 2024: Gus Atkinson picked up 12 wickets as England beat West Indies by an innings and 114 runs. It was the first Test match of the series played at the iconic Lords stadium. West Indies were put into bat first and the openers started well. They did not lose a wicket in the first ten overs and the openers looked in good touch. Gus Atkinson came in as the first change bowler and immediately made an impact by picking up the wicket of Brathwaite.
This was the opening that the England bowlers needed and Atkinson provided it for them. West Indies lost a couple of quick wickets and went from 34/0 to 44/3 in a matter of few overs. Gus Atkinson bowler rattled the middle and lower order as he picked up seven wickets in the first innings. West Indies were bowled out for 121 inside 42 overs.

England started the second innings well and four out of the top five batters scored half centuries. However, none of them could convert those into hundreds. Jamie Smith was the top scorer with 70 as England put up 371 in the first innings and took a big lead. They were right on top at the end of the second innings. Jayden Seales was the pick of the bowlers from the West Indies side picking up four wickets.
West Indies struggled once again as James Anderson picked up a few wickets with the new ball. They lost half their side with just 55 runs on the board. Gus Atkinson came into the attack and once again weaved his magic picking up five wickets as West Indies were bowled out for 136. England won the match by an innings and 114 runs. Gus Atkinson was the player of the match picking up seven wickets in the first innings and following it up with five more wickets in the second innings.
