On this day, March 11, Kane Williamson and Tim Southee suffered a loss in their 100th Test. It was the second match of the Test series between New Zealand and Australia at Christchurch. Australia were leading the series 1-0 and two of New Zealand’s best players were set to play their 100th Test match in the second match of the series. New Zealand were batting first and bowled out for just 162 as Josh Hazlewood picked up five wickets while Mitch Starc scalped three wickets. New Zealand put up 47 runs for the first wicket but after that it was a complete collapse as New Zealand were bowled out for 163 and Kane Williamson fell for 17 in the first innings.
In the second innings, Australia lost a couple of early wickets but Marnus Labuschagne stood firm and played a terrific knock of 90 while the lower order batters supported him with crucial twenties as Australia were bowled out for 256. They managed to secure a lead thanks largely due to the lower order batters and Labuschagne.
New Zealand were behind the game and lost Will Young cheaply but Latham and Williamson put on a 100 run partnership. Both batters got past their half-century and were dismissed. Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell put up another good partnership as New Zealand clawed their way back into the game. Ravindra was dismissed for 82 while Mitchell scored 58. New Zealand were bowled out for 372 in the third innings and they had set Australia a target of 279.
In the fourth innings, Australia were in all sorts of trouble as they were reduced to 34/4 and then lost Travis Head for 18 as they further fell to 80/5. Mitchell Marsh and Alex Carey rescued the Australian team as both batters went past their fifty. Marsh was dismissed for 80 but Carey remained unbeaten on 98 while Cummins scored 32* as Australia won the Test match by three wickets in a thrilling game. They also took the series 2-0 and it was a terrific match.
