Former Punjab fast bowler and senior selector Amanpreet Singh Gill passed away on May 6, 2026, at the age of 36, following a six-month battle with a serious illness. The Punjab Kings (PBKS) players wore black armbands today as a tribute during their match against SRH at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. In addition to wearing black armbands, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) and the wider cricketing community observed several solemn rituals today, May 6, 2026, to honour Amanpreet Singh Gill.

Before the first ball at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, players from both PBKS and SRH, along with match officials, stood in a line for a minute of silence. During the toss, PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer explicitly mentioned the passing of Amanpreet Singh Gill, noting his significant contributions as both a former player and a current selector for the state. The franchise released a formal statement on social media, expressing "deep grief and sorrow" and offering support to Gill's family during this difficult time. The Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) lowered its flag to half-mast at the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali as a mark of respect for their sitting Senior Selector. His cremation took place at 4:00 PM today at the Manimajra Cremation Ground, attended by several local cricketers and PCA officials who were not on IPL duty.

Punjab Kings decide to bowl Sunrisers Hyderabad

Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to bowl first against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in today's Match 49 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Captain Shreyas Iyer noted that PBKS has looked "invincible" while chasing targets this season. He mentioned that since SRH successfully chased in their last outing, he wanted to put them under pressure to set a total instead.

Despite the decision to bowl, SRH has had a blistering start, reaching 138/2 in 12.2 overs. Abhishek Sharma smashed 35 off 13 balls before falling to Lockie Ferguson. Travis Head contributed a quick 38 (19) before being dismissed by Yuzvendra Chahal. Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen are currently in the middle, looking to capitalize on three dropped catches by PBKS fielders so far.
