Eoin Morgan has emerged as a surprise contender for the Chennai Super Kings head coach position following Stephen Fleming’s departure. Former CSK spinner Ravichandran Ashwin suggested that the former England captain’s name is strongly being discussed within the franchise. Ashwin shared the update on his YouTube channel while discussing CSK’s search for Fleming’s replacement. “I have a strong hunch. Eoin Morgan's name is strongly linked to the CSK head coach role, per my sources. I think a decision will be made in the next week,” Ashwin said.

Ashwin also suggested that CSK could consider a different arrangement involving MS Dhoni before making a long-term appointment. “Personally, I feel this will go to MS Dhoni and be run by the others. I think that will be the right decision because appointing a replacement for Fleming is a touch late with the mega auction just a year away,” he said. He later added, “I have a feeling Eoin Morgan might be coming… His name is doing the rounds strongly…; early discussions are on, no doubt.” Morgan would bring significant leadership experience to CSK. He led England to their first ODI World Cup title in 2019. He also guided Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL 2021 final. However, he has never served as a head coach at the top level.

Brendon McCullum has emerged as a potential candidate to replace Stephen Fleming as Chennai Super Kings’ head coach. Fleming ended his long association with CSK after leaving the role in July. The franchise has confirmed that it wants an overseas coach to take charge. McCullum has previous IPL coaching experience with Kolkata Knight Riders. He currently oversees England’s white-ball teams. His familiarity with Fleming and CSK has added further intrigue to the speculation. However, there has been no confirmation that CSK have formally approached McCullum. Reports suggest the England and Wales Cricket Board could allow him to take up an IPL assignment during suitable windows.

CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has confirmed that the franchise will consult captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and former captain MS Dhoni before making its decision. Speaking to Cricbuzz, Viswanathan said, “We have not started applying our minds on this. First, we will have a coach. We have got calls from many interested candidates. We will sit and finalise.” He also confirmed that the new coach will have a role in future player recruitment. Viswanathan and whole-time director Rupa Gurunath are expected to finalise the appointment. McCullum is not the only name being discussed, with CSK batting coach Michael Hussey also reportedly among the candidates.
