In the great game of cricket- you would be hugely mistaken to think that all that matters is simply the records, such as the runs scored column or the wickets taken stack. What also matters, hugely speaking, is the factual description of information, especially when it comes to mentioning the correct skill set of bowlers and batters and not just that, but even the manner in which historical information is represented.
However, in the light of the recently held Naman Awards, nothing could be further than the established order or simply saying, how player information ought to be represented.
In what can be described as a weird gaffe of sorts, Shubman Gill, an eminent member of Indian cricket set up was seeing on the stage interacting with Harsha Bhogle over the key subject of the ICC 2025 ODI Champions Trophy, a key moment of Indian cricket’s white ball triumph.
The very squad to which Shubman Gill belonged and played a handy contribution towards his country’s victory!
But much to the chagrin of those in attendance as well as those who saw the event’s highlights over social media- the stats mentioned Shubman Gill as the captain of the team that lifted the coveted ICC trophy, when for real, it was Rohit Sharma as the captain under whose guidance Team India lifted the preeminent trophy.
But to one’s utter shock the name of the winner was depicted as Shubman Gill, wrongly listed on that occasion, as the captain of the victorious ICC CT 2025 when that credit should have gone to Rohit Sharma.
However, it was one of those weird instances where neither Shubman Gill and definitely not Rohit were at any fault.
What ought to have been in place - but wasn’t- was that such errors ought to be avoided especially in the light of key events such as a major awards ceremony.
To his credit, India’s regular white ball ODI captain was recently adjudged with the venerable Polly Umrigar Award by the BCCI authorities.
