Indian superstars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli endured disappointing returns to ODI cricket as both batters fell cheaply during the chase in the opening One-Day International against England at Edgbaston on Tuesday. There were a lot of expectations ahead of the series from the experienced batters but they failed in the first game. Set a target of 259 after India's bowlers restricted England to 258, the visitors would have hoped for a solid platform from their two senior-most batters. Instead, England pacers struck twice in the opening phase to leave India on the back foot.

Rohit was the first to depart after scoring 11 off 21 deliveries. He struggled a bit during his stay at the crease and found it difficult to get into his usual rhythm. Sam Curran eventually broke through, dismissing Rohit and handing England the early breakthrough they were searching for. The wicket gave the hosts the perfect start in their defence of their total.

Virat Kohli walked in to huge cheers after Rohit's dismissal but the former India captain managed just five runs from six balls before Jofra Archer produced a sharp delivery that trapped him lbw. Kohli did not opt for the review and the replays showed that it was plumb in front.

The dismissal came as a major setback for India especially considering the experience Rohit and Kohli bring to the batting line-up Both players were expected to anchor the chase but England's pacers came out on top with some excellent bowling. Both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are only playing in the ODI format having retired from the other formats. Fans were having a lot of expectations from the senior players ahead of this ODI series and their failures have put India in a spot of bother chasing a target of 258.

Shubman Gill crucial as India stutter in pursuit of 258

Earlier in the day, England looked set for a much bigger score after their openers added 61 runs without losing a wicket. However, India's bowlers fought back brilliantly to restrict the hosts to 258. Jasprit Bumrah struck an important blow to dismiss Brook, while Axar Patel delivered his career-best ODI figures of 4/62. Gurnoor Brar also made valuable contributions with the ball as India clawed their way back into the contest after England's strong start.

Despite the impressive bowling effort, India's chase got off to the worst possible start as the early exits of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli handed England the momentum. The visitors were left relying on the middle order to rescue the innings and keep their hopes alive in the series opener. Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer are building a partnership and a lot will depend on them in this run-chase. Fans at the stadium were left disappointed after failures from Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
