Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has been fined ₹12 lakh after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match No. 18 of the Indian Premier League 2026 against Delhi Capitals at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
The penalty comes under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which deals with minimum over-rate offences. Since this was Chennai Super Kings’ first offence of the season, Gaikwad was handed a fine of ₹12 lakh as per the league’s guidelines. Any further breaches could result in heavier fines and even suspensions, making it a warning sign for the CSK skipper moving forward.
Despite the fine, it turned out to be a memorable night for CSK as they finally registered their first win of the IPL 2026 season. After a string of disappointing performances in their opening games, the Chennai-based franchise bounced back strongly in front of their home crowd at Chepauk.
One of the standout performers of the night was Sanju Samson, who played a sensational innings to guide CSK to a commanding position. Samson, who had struggled in the initial matches, silenced his critics with a composed yet aggressive knock, anchoring the innings beautifully and ensuring CSK posted a competitive total.
Alongside him, Jamie Overton emerged as another key contributor. The English all-rounder delivered a crucial performance, stepping up when it mattered the most. Whether it was with the bat or ball, Overton made a significant impact, helping CSK gain control of the match at vital moments.
The win would come as a huge relief for Gaikwad and the CSK management, especially after losing their first few encounters of the season. However, the slow over-rate fine serves as a reminder that operational discipline remains equally important, even on a successful night.
With momentum finally on their side, CSK will now look to build on this victory and climb up the points table, while also ensuring they stay clear of further penalties in the tournament.
