Indian skipper Shubman Gill had a memorable day at Sinhalese Cricket Club, Colombo as the side locked horns with Sri Lanka in the second Test of the two-game series. The Indian men’s senior team is currently touring the Island Nation for two Test matches, where the guests established their dominance and went up 1-0 by recording a 165-run win over their counterparts. Needless to say, the visiting team took on the field in the second game aiming to extend their winning momentum. However, the guests had to face early setbacks in the form of cheap dismissals of openers KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal in the first session on Day 1.

However, brilliant innings from Devdutt Padikkal and Shubman Gill pushed the side to some stability. While Padikkal scored his second consecutive hundred, skipper Gill crossed the 3000-run mark in Tests before being dismissed on an even 50 off an Asitha Fernando delivery. Not only this, but the two also added 120 runs for the third wicket before Gill’s dismissal. However, amidst all this, Shubman Gill entered his name into the record books. Apart from pulling off his ninth Test fifty, Gill officially became the first ever Indian skipper to record 1000 runs in a single WTC cycle.

Team India Finish Opening Day’s Game with 300 Runs and Five Wickets in 85 Overs

On the opening day of the second Test, the Indian team posted 300 runs with five dismissals in 85 overs at Stumps. While Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul started off on a positive note, they failed to convert into bigger knocks. Devdutt Padikkal, who now seems to be India’s now go-to name at No. 3, was reprieved on 0 and 1. The hosts had to pay for it as he cemented his position with a second Test hundred. He scored 117 runs off 193 deliveries before getting out off a Keshara Nuwantha delivery.

On the other hand, skipper Shubman Gill crossed the 3000-run mark in Test cricket and became the first batter to score 3000+ runs in both ODIs and Tests in a decade. He is also the fourth youngest batter after Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, and Dilip Vengaskar to reach the milestone. While he got out on an even 50, Rishabh Pant was struck on his wrist and had to retire hurt at 3 runs. Apart from them, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja played a decent knock of 43 runs, whereas Dhruv Jurel and debutant Saransh Jain ended the day on 7* and 3*, respectively.
