A big relief for the Indian cricket fans as contrary to the speculations of various cricketers being in the race to captain India in T20I, Gaurav Gupta on X (formerly Twitter) has confirmed with a reliable source that Suryakumar Yadav will continue to lead India in T20I post IPL. Senior Times of India journalist Gaurav Gupta directly reported that a "reliable source" has confirmed Suryakumar Yadav is set to continue leading the national squad. The decision halts heavy speculation by media outlets claiming selectors had lost patience with his batting slump. The management is prioritizing stability under his leadership.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir strongly supports Suryakumar's continuation. He wants him to helm the side through a complete transition cycle extending until the 2028 T20 World Cup. This vote of confidence rewards his captaincy pedigree. He famously guided the national team to the 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup trophy just two months ago in March. Reports had heavily positioned Shreyas Iyer as the frontrunner to replace Suryakumar, following his stellar leadership role with Punjab Kings. He will now likely look to reintegrate purely as a middle-order batter.

Sanju Samson rumoured to replace Suryakumar Yadav as T20I skipper for India

According to a prominent report by Dainik Jagran, Sanju Samson has officially overtaken Shreyas Iyer to emerge as the top frontrunner to replace Suryakumar Yadav as India’s T20I captain. The BCCI selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, is actively looking at a leadership transition due to Suryakumar's recent dip in batting form. Samson was named the Player of the Tournament at the recent T20 World Cup. He did not start the tournament but played three explosive, match-winning knocks in high-pressure games against the West Indies (Super 8s), England (semi-final), and New Zealand (final).

Unlike Suryakumar, who managed only 195 runs across 10 fixtures in the IPL season, Samson has been in peak batting form domestically. While Shreyas Iyer has strong captaincy credentials, selectors are hesitant to name him skipper directly. He has not played a T20I for India since December 2023, whereas Samson is a regular fixture in the shortest format. Selectors could completely relieve Suryakumar of his duties and hand the captaincy to Samson straight away. Selectors might give Suryakumar one final series cycle to find his batting form. Under this framework, Suryakumar will travel as captain, but his performance will be closely monitored, with Sanju Samson appointed as his vice-captain.
