India's ODI captain Rohit Sharma's future in the format reportedly came under serious doubt after a report by India Today claimed that the BCCI selection committee had decided to move on from the veteran opener following the ongoing three-match ODI series against England. The report stated that Rohit recently held discussions with BCCI officials during the series but "wasn't happy" with their decision regarding his future. It further claimed that the selection committee, along with head coach Gautam Gambhir, spoke to Rohit last week about their plans.
According to a BCCI source quoted by IANS, the decision had already been made. The source said, "The selectors have decided that henceforth they will not select Rohit Sharma in ODIs. If he wants to bow out gracefully or chooses not to call it a day immediately, that is entirely his personal decision. However, the message is clear: the selectors will not pick him for ODIs after the game at Lord's on Sunday."
Rohit Sharma has already retired from Test cricket on May 7, 2025, before India's tour of England, after which Shubman Gill took over as the Test captain. Despite stepping away from the longest format, Rohit remains one of India's greatest ODI batters, having scored 11,731 runs in 286 ODIs. His attacking approach at the top of the order and consistent performances has established him as one of India's finest white-ball cricketers.

As of now, neither Rohit Sharma nor the BCCI has officially confirmed his ODI retirement, and the reports remain based on unnamed sources.
"I don't think that makes any difference": Sitanshu Kotak on Rohit Sharma's lean patch amidst retirement rumours
India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak threw his support behind Rohit Sharma despite growing speculation over the veteran opener's ODI future following India's defeat to England in the second ODI at Cardiff. Reports had claimed that the BCCI selectors were preparing to move on from Rohit after the ongoing series, but Kotak dismissed suggestions that the former India captain was under pressure or struggling with his form.
Speaking after the match, Kotak insisted that a player of Rohit's quality should not be judged based on a couple of low scores. He said, "Yes, he didn't get runs, but I don't think that makes any difference." The batting coach explained that every batter experiences phases where runs do not come easily and stressed that such situations are a normal part of the game.

Kotak also expressed confidence that Rohit could produce a match-winning knock in the series decider at Lord's. He stated, "On a particular day, many batters don't get the momentum they are looking for, and that can happen. You might see a completely different innings from Rohit Sharma at Lord's.โ
Explaining Rohit's dismissal in Cardiff, Kotak added, "Rohit probably didn't get balls in his areas and didn't get going. That's what I felt. So I wouldn't say he was struggling." His remarks made it clear that the Indian team management continued to have faith in the experienced opener despite the ongoing retirement rumours and his recent lean patch. Rohit, who has already retired from Test and T20I cricket, remains one of the greatest ODI batters, and Kotak's comments reinforced the dressing room's belief that he still has the ability to deliver on the biggest stage.
