Former India men’s skipper Rohit Sharma heaped praise on the women’s team and wished them luck ahead of their 2026 T20 World Cup opener. The Women in Blue will be up against arch rivals Pakistan at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Sunday, June 14, in their campaign opener. This will be the first time the neighbouring nations will be up against each other on the cricketing field since the February 14 men’s T20 World Cup match in Colombo.
Speaking about their campaign in the marquee tournament, former India skipper and T20 World Cup 2024 winner Rohit Sharma lauded the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side and wished them luck on the behalf of the entire men’s team. "They've been playing really good cricket for the past few years now. I know in T20 cricket they've come very close, but I want this time around to go all the way. Everyone's rooting for them. They have a solid team, very well-balanced team. And they'll enjoy playing in England. Best wishes from all of us here in Men's Team India.”
I'm sure that you're going to make 140 crore Indians proud: India head coach Gautam Gambhir to Women’s Team
In the video message shared by the men’s team to the women’s team, head coach Gautam Gambhir wished the team good luck and hoped they would bring the cup home. "I'm sure that you're going to make 140 crore Indians proud. Not many people get the opportunity to represent the country on the world stage. Don't be scared of making a mistake. Every time you're in doubt, take the positive route. Good luck, bring the cup home,” said Gambhir.
Apart from him, India’s newly appointed men’s T20 captain Shreyas Iyer said, "Here's wishing all the very best to the Indian women's cricket team. Be fearless, be ruthless and play to win.” Not only this, but ODI skipper Shubman Gill also had some words to share for the team and he said, "You guys have won it before, and you'll do it again. Our full wishes to you and all the best for the World Cup.”
Following their clash against Pakistan, Kaur and Co. will lock horns with Netherlands on Wednesday, June 17 at Headingley Carnegie, Leeds.
