Catches win you matches, and when dropped, they let you off the hook where it comes to winning tournaments, even if it means established preeminent leagues such as the Indian Premier League. But having said that, nowhere does it apply more to a certain Mumbai Indians side than any other team competing in the very same event. A glaring example of just that is the case, in fact, came to light just hours ago as the famed Mumbai side went down once again - which has been such a recurring sight- to Kolkata Knight Riders team! It really has been a huge problem for Mumbai time and again as seen in different junctures of the ongoing 2026 edition and perhaps the contest against KKR only highlighted what’s been an ongoing dillema for the under fire side. So much so that their captain has had to say a few things in the aftermath!
But up first, a bit of context.
Mumbai Indians had a very poor IPL 2026 season, and their weak fielding became one of the biggest reasons for their failure. The team made many mistakes on the field, dropped easy catches, and missed important chances in key matches. These errors finally cost them a place in the playoffs. The worst moment came against Punjab Kings in Dharamsala. Mumbai Indians dropped five catches in one match, which became an unwanted record for the franchise. Along with bad misfields, these mistakes helped Punjab Kings score more than 200 runs and win the game comfortably.

Mumbai Indians also struggled badly in matches against Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. In the KKR match, Deepak Chahar and Robin Minz had a communication mix-up while trying to catch Rovman Powell. The dropped chance allowed KKR to chase the target easily. Against RCB, more dropped catches and poor teamwork in the field led to another close defeat in the final moments.
Captain Hardik Pandya openly accepted that the team’s fielding was “quite poor” throughout the season. He said there was “no hiding away” from the mistakes. Pandya also showed his frustration on the field, even sarcastically clapping after some communication errors between teammates.
Surely given the overall agility and outstanding levels of fielding that they have set in the past, when Hardik Pandya was at his palm and exceptional fields in the outfield, such as Kieron Pollard were a part of the side. Mumbai would want to reflect back on how they were in the past, and come back stronger. But that’s for the next time around.
