Not that we as fans or critics of the game need to pose like investigative journalists or be Sherlocks for something as vague as a cricketer liking a post on social media, but really, when such a thing does happen- a cricketer liking someone’s picture- we tend to think of theirs this liking towards something or some trend. And a similar sentiment came to life most recently when former Indian cricket captain and batting legend Virat Kohli “accidentally” liked a picture of what appears to be an influencer on Instagram. The entire incident, not long after, courting attention (as is often the case) on social media. Especially X!

So what did happen, after all?

Batting sensation of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru camp Virat Kohli found himself at the centre of social media chatter after fans noticed that he had liked a post by an influencer — something many quickly assumed was accidental. And why wouldn’t they? Although, technically speaking and let us give cricketers a break- simply seeing a cricketer having liked someone’s picture on social media is no crime against humanity. Or is it?

An accidental click

The like didn’t go unnoticed for long, with screenshots spreading rapidly across platforms.

While fans were already reacting to the moment, it was Yuzvendra Chahal who added a hilarious twist. The leg-spinner dropped a comment on the same post, simply writing “Algorithm” along with emojis, hinting that Kohli’s like might have been one of those accidental taps people often blame on social media feeds.

Chahal’s comment instantly caught attention and became a talking point among fans. Many found it funny, especially given how relatable the “algorithm” excuse has become whenever someone interacts with a post unintentionally.

Comments flooding up, not long after!

Soon, the comments section was flooded with reactions. Some fans joked that Kohli might soon clarify the situation, while others played along with Chahal’s take, turning it into a meme fest.

The incident quickly went viral, showing once again how even the smallest social media activity involving top cricketers can grab massive attention — especially when someone like Chahal jumps in with perfect comic timing.

Moments like these also highlight the lighter side of cricketers off the field, where interactions between players add to the entertainment for fans.

Intentional or not?

Whether intentional or not, Kohli’s like and Chahal’s cheeky response have given fans a moment to laugh about, keeping the buzz alive beyond just cricket action.
