The cricketing world is mourning the untimely demise of Amanpreet Singh Gill, a former pacer and prominent administrator who passed away on May 6, 2026, at the age of 36. The news of Gill’s passing resonated deeply with India's cricketing elite, most notably Virat Kohli, who was a teammate of Gill during their Under-19 days. While he shared the dressing room with icons like Yuvraj Singh and Brett Lee, his greatest impact later came as a selector and talent scout. As a member of the Punjab Senior Selection Committee, he was instrumental in identifying the next generation of local stars. After a courageous six-month battle with a serious illness, his passing has left a significant void in the Punjab cricket fraternity.

"Shocked and saddened to hear about Amanpreet Gill’s passing. Sending prayers and strength to his family and loved ones. Rest in peace. Om Shanti,” wrote Virat Kohli on X. Gill played alongside Virat Kohli in the India U-19 team. He was known for his talent as a right-arm medium-fast bowler and he first made his mark during the 2007 Under-19 tri-series in Sri Lanka. There, he emerged as a standout performer, claiming 9 wickets in 5 matches and playing a pivotal role in India’s success.

Amanpreet Gill’s contributions as a selector and mentor left a lasting legacy on Punjab cricket

Amanpreet Gill represented the Punjab state team in the Ranji Trophy between 2006 and 2008 and was a member of the Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) squad during the 2009 and 2010 IPL seasons. He wasn’t exactly known for his contribution to the sport as a player but he later emerged as a valuable asset in the selection committee. He did a fine job in identifying talents and helping the scouts navigate through their work in the field. His dedication to the sport earned him immense respect from teammates and peers alike across the Indian domestic circuit.

Virat Kohli’s message highlights the deep bond shared by the U-19 team members, a group of players who rose through the ranks together. For Kohli, the loss of a teammate at such a young age would be a tragic loss. The other day in the game against the Delhi Capitals, he experienced an encounter with his teammate, Ajitesh Argal, who turned to officiating in the game. While that moment would have overwhelmed the RCB star, this one would be gut wrenching. His tribute sparked a wave of condolences across the globe, as fans and fellow cricketers joined in honoring the memory of a prominent figure in the sport.

The impact of Gill's loss was visible on the field during the IPL 2026 clash between the Punjab Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad, where the Punjab players wore black armbands as a mark of respect. His cremation in Chandigarh was attended by a large gathering of the cricketing community, all standing in solidarity with his family.
