Currently his incumbent role as the Head of the BCCI Centre of Excellence (which was formerly the National Cricket Academy) in Bengaluru requires him to observe, guide and support the next set of talents contesting for a spot among the men’s cricket side make it through in a manner that only the best from a talent pool can make it through. But his next immediate challenge could well be more definitive in the context of what happens to the men’s senior Indian Cricket team, in particular. 

Truth be told, life for VVS Laxman at present is replete with an interesting possible change of fortunes that shall see a great well wisher of Indian Cricket playing an avid role in shaping the next-gen talents! 

Where current news serves us right, then it can be believed- even as nothing’s been confirmed as yet- that the very very special Laxman could well become the next BCCI Director of Cricket for India. It’s a newly created position that one reckons could involve a fine sense of judgment that of course stems from years of first rate experience in managing India’s vital cricketing talent pool. 

And by that count, Laxman, seems to be just the right man for the job. What can’t be doubted are his achievements as a talented and matchwinning batter and a close student of the game he’s served brilliantly during his long stint for the sport.

But what must be understood is the sheer importance that this newly created role offers to a man who’s as loved as he’s respected.  

 It could be stated that the the newly created role in the form of BCCI Director of Cricket actually connects or unifies India's high-performance structure. But how so? It connects the senior national teams, across men’s and women’s team, to the network of national selectors, and not just that- but even coaching staffs, as well as youth pathways under a single overarching strategic umbrella. 

With 11,119 runs from 220 international appearances for India along with 17 Test centuries and 56 half centuries, Laxman remained elusive on many a bowlers’ wicket tally list and exclusive in that his presence as a test match specialist underlined his broader ability to hold on to an end and score briskly and poetically in the ardent red ball format of the game.  

One of the more proficient batters who often saved his best for the best of competitors such as England and Australia, one of Laxman’s finest ever appearances for India in proper Test match cricket was courtesy his brilliant innings of 167 at the famed SCG aka the Sydney Cricket Ground.
