Shreyas Iyer has gotten off to the worst start possible as captain with a historic loss against Ireland in the opening game of the series. The appointment of Shreyas Iyer as captain was backed by many fans and experts and his captaincy debut has divided the fans. After the humiliating loss in the first game of the series, the fans seem to be worried regarding the start of the Shreyas Iyer captaincy era. The Punjab Kings skipper wasn’t able to contribute with the bat as he scored just 3 runs off 7 balls. The blame for India’s defeat was pinned on some of the players and they have made Shreyas Iyer their scapegoat as well.

India were able to limit Ireland to just 182 runs in the innings and that seemed like a cakewalk for the stature of the Indian batting unit over the past couple of months. However, that wasn’t the case as the Indian batters weren’t able to perform and Abhishek Sharma was the sole performer for the side. Prasidh Krishna conceded 57 runs from his quota of 4 overs and that was the game-changing moment of the game for Ireland. Tilak Varma and Gautam Gambhir were also criticised heavily by the fans after India lost their first ever game against Ireland.

Fans question Shreyas Iyer's leadership after historic defeat

The fans on X have criticised Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy claiming that he is just fit for the captaincy roles in the IPL. This was a terrible start to the captaincy tenure of Shreyas Iyer and the fans haven’t taken it lightly. Here are some of the reactions on X:

Shreyas Iyer would be hopeful of making a comeback in the second game of the series and that could possibly make up for the defeat in the series opener. The fans were disappointed probably because of the high expectations that they had in Shreyas Iyer and the next match would be vital for the Indian skipper.
