Things took a dramatic turn during the second Test in Sinhalese Cricket Club, Colombo on Sunday. Sri Lanka are hosting India in the second of the two-game Test series in Colombo. The game saw visiting captain Shubman Gill win the toss and invite the hosts to field first. After recording a huge 165-run win over their counterparts, the Indian side has taken a 1-0 lead in the series, and looking strong, aiming to extend their winning momentum and solidify their WTC Final 2027 qualification chances. While Gautam Gambhir’s coached team was aiming for a positive start, they ended up losing their openers quickly.

Indian vice-captain KL Rahul could only manage to put up 18 runs on the board before departing off a Lahiru Kumara delivery. Yashasvi Jaiswal, on the other hand, missed his fifty by five runs and was forced to walk back after being dismissed by Asitha Fernando at 45 runs in 53 deliveries. However, things soon escalated between players on both sides while the Indian youngster was walking back to the pavilion.

In visuals now doing rounds on social media, Fernando could be seen giving an animated send-off to Jaiswal and exchanging a few words. However, the Indian opener turned back and confronted his Sri Lankan rival and things quickly turned heated. The pair came close to each other and exchanged more words, and before the situation appeared to verge on physical contact, Sri Lanka skipper intervened and separated them.

Shubman Gill and Devdutt Padikkal Get India to Stability Before Lunch

India, who have seen a dip in their performance recently, especially in the longest format, currently stand at a crossroads with respect to the WTC Final 2027. However, after dominating the first Test, they have managed to get themselves back in the picture and are in dire need of winning the second game as well. However, after suffering such humiliation at home turf, the Dhananjaya de Silva-led side didn’t seem to be in the mood to let go of the second game as well. His boys started off on a strong note on Sunday, and sent both Indian openers back to the hut in the first session itself.

However, Devdutt Padikkal and skipper Shubman Gill tried to give the side some stability and took India’s score to 93-2 by 27.3 overs. At the time of writing, Padikkal was batting at 16 off 45 deliveries while Gill was at 17 off 35 balls. Both players steadied the side after the early wickets and on-field drama.
