According to latest reports, eight Commonwealth Games-bound Indian women cricketers are still awaiting their visas to travel for the Birmingham CWG 2022. A source close to the development has reportedly informed that the visas of eight players has been pending since they had applied.

Reports have further claimed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India is monitoring the situation and expecting the issue to be resolved by the end of Friday (22nd July). “BCCI is hopeful that by the end of the day, the approval on the visa might come. Cricket’s apex body in the country is in constant touch with concerned authority, India’s Olympic Association and CWG Organising Committee,” a source was reportedly quoted.

Earlier, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly had informed that a CWG-bound member of the Indian women’s cricket team tested positive for Covid-19 before boarding the flight for England. The BCCI President confirmed the news on Thursday after the Apex Council Meeting. Notably, the identity is yet to be disclosed.

Speaking of Indian women’s cricket team, skipper Harmanpreet Kaur recently stated that Team India is aiming to replicate the moment which javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra created after winning the gold-medal at Tokyo Olympics.

“We have watched Olympics and CWG on Tv and I myself got goosebumps when the national anthem was played with Neeraj Chopra getting the gold medal in Tokyo. We want to replicate that moment,” Smriti Mandhana said during a media interaction ahead of the team’s departure for Birmingham on Friday (July 22).

Notably, Indian women cricket team will be competing at the Commonwealth Games 2022 for the first time. After an appearance in 1998, cricket is making a comeback in the event in the shortest format of the game. Team India are set to face Australia in the opening match on July 29. Around eight teams have been divided into two groups with India in Group A along with Australia, Pakistan and Barbados. Sri Lanka, England, New Zealand and South Africa are placed in Group B.
