Barcelona have confirmed a significant injury blow for Roony Bardghji just days before the new season gets underway. The Swedish winger has been diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee after picking up the problem in training. Initial assessments had already raised concerns about the seriousness of the issue and the club has now confirmed the injury. The 20-year-old is set to undergo surgery in the coming days. Barcelona have not yet given a clear recovery timeline, saying a more precise picture will only emerge once the operation has taken place and further medical evaluations are completed. This is especially tough for Bardghji because it is the second ACL injury to the same knee.

This injury is a huge blow to Barcelona as they finalise preparations for the season. They will start the campaign without one of their young attacking options while Bardghji begins another extended road back to full fitness. The exact length of his absence will become clearer after the operation, but the club must now plan on the assumption that he could miss a substantial portion of the season. The timing also complicates his future at the club. Reports suggested Bardghji had been open to leaving this summer, with both a loan and a permanent move that included a buy-back clause discussed as possibilities. The ACL tear changes the equation of transfer tricky.

Barcelona deal Injury Setback Just Days Before New Season

He previously suffered a rupture while still at Copenhagen in May 2024 when he tore the ACL in his right knee during training. The injury kept him out of action for a year. He returned in the final weeks of the 2024-25 season. Despite the injury issues, Barcelona moved quickly in the summer of 2025, signing him for a four-year deal. At Camp Nou he found himself competing for minutes on the right wing behind Lamine Yamal. The latest setback arrives just as he was preparing for another season at Camp Nou, having featured 28 times across all competitions last term 21 appearances in La Liga, five in the Champions League, one in the Copa del Rey and one in the Spanish Super Cup. He contributed two goals and four assists during that spell.

Bardghji’s career so far has been defined by plenty of injury setbacks. At just 20 he already has senior experience in the Champions League, multiple domestic trophies, and a handful of caps for Sweden. He will be keen to bounce back from this latest injury setback. The new La Liga season is just around the corner with the season officially getting underway this weekend (from 15 August), though Barcelona’s own start has been pushed back slightly because of the World Cup schedule. Hansi Flick’s side will open their title defence away at Elche on Sunday 23 August, before hosting Athletic Club at Camp Nou four days later on the 27th.
