The Atletico Madrid manager, Diego Simeone, had hit the “Go to Sleep” reaction towards the crowd after his side qualified for the Semi-Final of the Champions League. It was a tense game as FC Barcelona had put up quite the fight. The visitors had taken a 2-goal lead early in the match but were unable to maintain it for long. A fine finish from Ademola Lookman helped Atletico Madrid to regain their lead in the tie.
Diego Simeone’s reaction after the match is interpreted by the fans as a reply to those who criticised his defensive tactics. It’s a classic Simeone tactic addressed by the term ‘Haram Ball’, in which the formation is strictly defensive to protect the lead the side has rather than extend it.

FC Barcelona’s fightback fades as Diego Simeone’s tactics prevail at the end
Atletico Madrid had won the first match against FC Barcelona by 2-0 at the Spotify Camp Nou. It came off as a massive disappointment to the Barcelona fans as they expected a much better result. Before the 2nd leg of the fixture, Lamine Yamal had challenged Diego Simeone for a “1v1” or a direct challenge to Atletico’s defensive structure. In the 2nd leg of the fixture, Lamine Yamal was quick to pounce on a poor mistake from Clement Lenglet and scored his 6th Champions League goal of the season. Soon after, in the 24th minute, Dani Olmo played Ferran Torres through,h and he put the ball in the net with a clinical finish. FC Barcelona had levelled the tie with just 24 minutes on the clock, and a comeback looked very achievable.
In the 31st minute of the game, Ademola Lookman was able to find the back of the net with a brilliant finish. It was an exquisite piece of counter-attacking football as the ball was played from the back flank to Antoine Griezmann, who played a lovely through ball to Marcos Llorente. From there, Llorente made no mistake in getting the ball across to Lookman, and he brought Atletico Madrid back into the game. Since then, Barcelona had their chances but weren’t as good in the final third. The red card of Eric Garcia seemed to be the final nail in the coffin, and from then on, a comeback was seemingly impossible.
Most of the pundits had expected the style of football that Atletico Madrid would play as they had to defend their lead. Diego Simeone’s tactics are often considered to be “boring” or “sleepy” as it is straight-out defensive football. He could potentially be taking a dig at the Barcelona fans and critics who blatantly criticise his style of play. As far as Atletico Madrid and Diego Simeone are concerned, they just want to play good football and win their battles, in which they are proving to be successful.
Atletico Madrid could potentially face Arsenal in the semi-finals, and they will be hopeful that they can see them out as well. It is a hectic couple of weeks for the La Liga giants, and they will be keen on securing the UEFA Champions League title for the first time in history.
