Jose Mourinho, a veteran coach who was known for coaching great clubs like Manchester United, Inter Milan, Chelsea and Tottenham, joined the Istanbul club Fenerbahce in the year 2024. The 62-year-old led the Turkish team to a second-place finish in the Turkish Super Lig, finishing 11 points behind their fierce rivals Galatasaray.
In their quest to qualify for the Champions League this season, Fenerbahce took on Benfica in the play-off stage. The Turkish giants lost to Benfica by a scoreline of 1-0 which ensured that they won't be a part of prestigious UEFA tournament this season. Following the match, the board of Fenerbahce took a massive decision to sack their manager Jose Mourinho. Fenerbahce who have started their league campaign with a win and a draw will now be on the search for a new manager who can lead the team to glory.

The club took to its official social media handles, writing, “Our Professional Football First Team's technical director, Jose Mourinho, who has been carrying out his duties starting from the 2024-2025 season, has parted ways with us. We thank him for his efforts for our team until today and wish him success in his future career.” However, the club has not yet announced a replacement for Jose Mourinho.
The sacking of Mourinho was announced just a day after another Turkish club, Besiktas sacked their manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer less than one hour after failing to qualify for the UEFA Conference League. Fenerbahce stated that they mutually came to a decision with Jose Mourinho and agreed to terminate the contract following the loss. The 62-year-old leaves the club with 37 wins in the 62 matches he has coached the club.
