Argentina's progress at the FIFA World Cup sparked widespread debate after a controversial 2-1 victory over Egypt, leading to an online petition demanding that Lionel Messi's side be removed from the tournament. The petition, titled "Kick Argentina out of the World Cup," has gained significant attention on social media, with thousands of fans accusing FIFA of favouring the defending champions.

The controversy centred. around a late penalty awarded to Argentina during the knockout clash against Egypt. Many supporters and pundits argued that the decision was highly debatable, with critics claiming the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) failed to intervene despite what they believed was minimal contact. The incident proved decisive as Argentina sealed a place in the next round.

According to reports, the viral petition stated, "It is obvious that FIFA and the referees are biased toward Lionel Messi and Argentina. Why should the rest of the world compete when the winner has already been decided? Kick Argentina out of the World Cup and give everyone else a fair chance."

The campaign fuelled heated discussions across social media platforms, with fans divided over whether the refereeing decisions genuinely favoured Argentina or were simply part of football's subjective nature. While some believed the officiating was unfair, others have defended the decisions, insisting they fell within the laws of the game.

Despite the online backlash and growing calls for action, FIFA has not announced any investigation or disciplinary measures against Argentina. The world governing body has continued with the tournament as scheduled, while Lionel Messi's team remains focused on its quest for another World Cup title amid the ongoing controversy.

Egypt's FIFA appeal explained after controversial Argentina clash

Argentina defeated Egypt 3-2 in one of the most dramatic matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but the result quickly became one of the tournament's biggest controversies. Egypt dominated for most of the game and built a two-goal lead before Argentina staged a remarkable comeback with three goals in the final 13 minutes to book a place in the quarter-finals.

The biggest talking points came from several refereeing decisions. Egypt believed they had scored another goal earlier in the match, but the effort was ruled out after a VAR review for a foul in the build-up. Later, the Egyptian players strongly appealed for a penalty after Mohamed Salah went down inside the box, but the referee allowed play to continue. Moments later, Enzo Fernández scored the winning goal for Argentina, leaving the Egyptian camp furious.

After the match, the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) submitted a formal complaint to FIFA. The federation stated that it "could not remain silent" over what it described as unfair refereeing and the improper use of the VAR system. It argued that several key decisions directly influenced the outcome of the match and called on FIFA to investigate the officiating. Reports also stated that the EFA requested that referee François Letexier not be assigned any further matches in the tournament.

Despite Egypt's appeal and widespread debate over the officiating, FIFA did not overturn the result, and Argentina advanced to the quarter-finals.
