UEFA have confirmed the new venue for the Champions League final in 2027, and it’s going to happen at the Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid, which has a capacity of 70,000. The decision to award the home stadium of Atletico Madrid the final of the UEFA Champions League 2027 was taken after Milan’s San Siro was stripped of the honour due to the concerns surrounding the refurbishment of the stadium.
As per the report published in BBC Sport, UEFA made the decision to reopen the bidding for the Champions League final in 2027 due to the situation surrounding the San Siro. It led to the governing body of European football choosing the Estadio Metropolitano as the hosts for the final in just under two years’ time, where Liverpool defeated Tottenham Hotspur in the same contest in 2019.
UEFA discuss matter of Italian and Spanish clubs hosting domestic league matches overseas
Apart from that, UEFA also declared the venue for the final of the Women’s Champions League 2027, which will happen at Stadion Narodowy in Warsaw, Poland. All of these decisions were taken in a meeting by the UEFA’s Executive Committee in Tirana in Albania, where discussions around allowing the Spanish and Italian clubs to play domestic league matches overseas also took place without any conclusions.
“The committee acknowledged it as an important and growing issue but expressed the desire to ensure that it has the views of all stakeholders before coming to a final decision. There are many issues to resolve and as the European governing body, UEFA has a responsibility to take all such factors into account,” said UEFA in regards to the domestic league matches taking place overseas in regards to European clubs.
“As a result, no decision was taken today but UEFA will undertake a round of consultation with all stakeholders in European football - including fans,” they further added.
