Andre Onana, the Cameroonian and Manchester United goalkeeper, has reportedly agreed a loan move to Turkish side Trabzonspor with the transfer window in the country open until Friday, September 12. It is understood that while the deal is yet to be finalised between both the clubs, the paperwork is expected to happen in time to allow the 29-year-old to play for Trabzonspor against Fenerbahce away from home on Sunday, September 14, at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium.
As per the report from BBC Sport, Andre Onana was linked with Galatasaray, but they secured a deal for Turkish and Trabzonspor goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir in a deal in the range of £31.2 million. With the spot vacated by Ugurcan Cakir at Trabzonspor, the club started to look for possible replacements, and they identified the Cameroonian goalkeeper for the role before agreeing personal terms with him.
Manchester United signed Andre Onana in 2023 under Erik ten Hag's management
Since Manchester United signed Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens, 23, on a permanent deal from Royal Antwerp on deadline day, September 1, it was likely that either Andre Onana or Altay Bayindir might move elsewhere. This is especially the case since the club manager Ruben Amorim reportedly wants to keep a small squad due to lack of European football, which is contrary to having four goalkeepers.
Moreover, Andre Onana joined Manchester United for £47.2 million when Erik ten Hag was the manager of the club after they had worked with Ajax. Although, in just over two years at the Red Devils, he didn’t look quite secure in goal, costing the team a few matches singlehandedly, especially in the UEFA Champions League 2023-24 season, and now, they are out of European competitions.
Also, Erik ten Hag was sacked from the job in October 2024 after a tough start to last season, which led to Ruben Amorim’s appointment as the new manager of Manchester United.
