Roberto Martinez cleared the air regarding the suggestions of resting Cristiano Ronaldo in their final group stage fixture against Colombia. The Portugal Head Coach was asked if he would have liked to rest their star forward in the final game of the group stage for the side. He dismissed all claims stating that he is in the right mind space to play all 90 minutes of the game. There was also a narrative building around Ronaldo being benched as Lionel Messi was benched in the game against Jordan. Martinez claimed that all such comparisons are merely childish and he backed Cristiano Ronaldo to contribute fully for the side.

“Cristiano is used to being in the right place at the right time. He is very disciplined in his position, and he also creates space for his teammates; His physical and mental condition is not in question. We may need to make changes in the next match, but we base every decision on the information and data we have,” stated Roberto Martinez on resting Cristiano Ronaldo or not. The Portuguese icon has been the standout player for the side over the years and benching him could upset the rhythm of the side as well.

Portugal back Ronaldo despite criticism prior to Round of 32

Cristiano Ronaldo hasn’t been in great form in the 2026 FIFA World Cup as his contributions have been minimal. In the first game against DR Congo, Portugal were held to a hard fought 1-1 draw and Ronaldo faced criticism, claiming that at times he was selfish and that he was nowhere to be seen on the pitch. However, in the game against Uzbekistan, Cristiano Ronaldo scored two fine goals to silence the critics and the fans were elated by his performance. But, the Portuguese star was once again criticised after the game against Columbia as his contribution in the game was minimal. He would be under massive pressure to win games for Portugal as the football fans have their eyes locked on him.

Portugal were considered as one of the favourites to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup considering the excellence they have across all departments. Their biggest strength was their midfield with the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Joao Neves and Vitinha. However, their performance in the World Cup hasn’t been satisfactory as they have failed to dominate certain games. Their draw against Columbia would seem like an even contest on paper but the South Americans were more lethal with the ball and it's unfortunate that they couldn’t break the deadlock. Cristiano Ronaldo and his men would have to perform even better in the knockout stages of the tournament, if they are to make a strong case for themselves in the World Cup.

Portugal will be taking on Croatia in the Round of 32 fixture and it promises to be an absolute belter of a game. Both the sides haven’t been at their best in the tournament and they would be hoping for that one elusive victory that could get their World Cup campaign back on track in North America.
