Star footballer and one of the legends of the game, Lionel Messi delivered a magical performance in Argentina’s 3-0 win over Venezuela in the CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifier on Thursday, September 4. The 38-year-old scored twice at his home stadium - Estadio Monumental Antonio Vespucio Liberti in Buenos Aires amid 80,000 fans.

The reigning World Cup champions dominated from the outset, creating early chances through Nicholas Tagliafico and Franco Mastantuono, but were denied by Venezuelan goalkeeper Rafael Romo. However, the breakthrough came in the 39th minute with Julian Alvarez setting up Messi, who found the back of the net with his left foot volley. Lautaro Martinez doubled the lead in the 76th minute and Messi added another to his name just four minutes later.

The Argentine legend was emotional during his side’s 3-0 win in the World Cup qualifier and was seen fighting back tears before the kick-off. While the videos of this moment have been going viral since then, in the post-match presentation, the legend also hinted on his retirement. “Being able to finish this way here with my people is what I always dreamed of,” Messi said in a cracking voice.

“For many years, I had the affection of Barcelona fans and my dream was to have it here in my country too,” he added. Hinting at his retirement, the 38-year-old added, “It’s not something I like, want, or expect. But time is passing, and it’s been many years.”

While the victory was important for the Argentina side, who have already qualified for the FIFA World Cup 2026, they will next take the field in their final qualifying match, set to be played on September 10 against Ecuador.
