In a major development from the Indian Premier League, former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as a mentor of the Lucknow franchise for IPL 2022. The news comes a day after Andy Flower was selected as the head coach of the franchise.

Senior sports journalist Boria Majumdar made the revelation on his Twitter account where he also said that Gautam Gambhir is delighted to be back in IPL. Notably, the 40-year-old has played for Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders in past, having also guided KKR to two IPL titles in 2012 and 2014 respectively.

Gautam Gambhir was last seen in IPL in 2018

The former left-handed batsman has had a glorious career in the Indian Premier League, where he amassed 4217 runs in 154 matches. Gautam Gambhir was last seen in the tournament in 2018 when he played for Delhi Capitals. After stepping down from captaincy, he played a key role in the franchise's transition under the leadership of young Shreyas Iyer.

Fans would be elated to see the charismatic cricketer back in the tournament, but this time in a different role altogether. With so many years of experience behind his back, there is no doubt that Gautam Gambhir will have a huge impact on the Lucknow franchise who are on the course of building a very solid core.

KL Rahul likely to be the captain of Lucknow

After two high profile appointments of Andy Flower and Gautam Gambhir in the backroom staff, the focus of the Lucknow franchise now shifts on signing the 3 players in the draft. According to sources close to SportsTiger, the UP based team is very close to securing the services of KL Rahul, who is set to be their captain for IPL 2022.

Apart from Rahul, the franchise is reportedly also linked with Rashid Khan and Ishan Kishan who could be their other two recruitments. If it turns out to be true, there is no doubt that the Lucknow franchise will head to the mega auctions as one of the strongest looking sides ahead of IPL 2022.
