Seven-times champions India will be facing maiden finalists Nepal in the finale of South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championship on Saturday. While the game gives India a chance to regain their lost glory at the competition, it also gives an equal opportunity to Nepal to upset India and take home their maiden SAFF Championship title.
Though India are clear favourites coming into the contest, Nepal could take confidence with the fact that the Blue Tigers- the most successful team of the tournament- had bagged the glory way back in 2015 as the very next edition saw them getting defeated by Maldives in the final encounter. Additionally, defender Subhasish Bose would warm the bench, courtesy a red card he was shown in the previous game, and India's coach Igor Stimac will also be not available for the final due to the second yellow he received in the previous game. Saying so, it could not be denied that the momentum is in favour of Sunil Chhetri's men as they have advanced to the final of the ongoing competition with two-back-to-back victories, with one of them coming against Nepal.
The Gorkhalis, on the other hand, have entered the final with two wins and as many losses. It is worth noting that their previous best at the SAFF Championship was a third-place finish in the inaugural edition in 1993. What they have achieved this year is definitely commendable but a trophy would add cherry on the cake.
