In December 2021, the former Indian captain MS Dhoni started a poultry farm. For a long time, he had been yearning for the Kadaknath breed chicken farming at his sprawling farm on 43 acres of land in Ranchi. This breed of chicken is high in protein and free of cholesterol and fat.

For the Kadaknath breed chicks, Dhoni’s farm managers had interacted with farmer Vinod Meda of Jhabua district in Madhya Pradesh in 2020. The black Kadakanth is the Indian breed of chicken that has its roots in Jhabua. In 2018, the district won the legal battle for the Geographical Indication (GI) tag against Chhattisgarh.

In the latest news development, Dhoni has received 2000 Kedaknath chicks from the co-operative firm of Meda. The Jhabua collector Somesh Mishra gave the confirmation of the delivery of the concerned product to Ranchi and praised the former Indian skipper for taking an interest in the Kadaknath chicken. He further informed the people about the facility to order on the website as well.

“It is a welcome step that a popular personality like Dhoni has shown interest in the Kadaknath chicken variety. Anyone can order these hatchlings through the online mode, which will benefit tribal people (breeding this chicken) in the district," Mishra said.

The Kadaknath Chicken is also a preferred choice for the Indian skipper, as it sells way above the price of chicken of other breeds. This consignment was due to arrive early, but the bird flu outbreak in January this year caused a delay of three months.

After the delivery, Meda reckoned that he would present a traditional bow and arrow to Dhoni as a symbol of Jhabua’s tribal culture.

In 2022, the demand for the Kadaknath chicken has soared and has already been allowed to sell all over India.
