The SAFF Championship is set to begin on June 21 in Bangalore with eight teams this year, three more than the last time when it was held in 2021. Football Sri Lanka initially expressed their interest to bid for hosting the tournament but they were sanctioned by FIFA in January 2023. Kuwait and Lebanon are the only non-South Asian teams to take part with a special invitation from the All India Football Federation.
The eight teams of the SAFF Championship have been divided into two groups of four each. Defending Champions India are favorites along with Lebanon (FIFA ranking:99) who are the highest-ranked side in the competition. India is also the most successful team in the competition with eight titles followed by Maldives who have two titles.
