After two dream seasons to kick off their IPL journey, the Gujarat Titans fell off a cliff in the 2024 season as they failed to qualify for the Playoffs and settled for a bottom-half finish. Unlike his predecessor, captaincy hasn't been kind to Indian batting star Shubman Gill as he couldn't maximise his and his side's potential to make a deep run in the tournament.
But this dismal season wasn't a result of poor on-field performances as several outside factors short-handed the Titans even before the 2024 season. So with the 17th edition of the IPL nearing its conclusion, let's look at why Gujarat Titans failed to reach the playoffs.
3 Reasons why GT didn’t qualify for IPL 2024 playoffs
Major absentees
Before the IPL 2024 auction, Gujarat Titans were hit with a massive blow as their champion captain Hardik Pandya was traded away to his former franchise Mumbai Indians. With Pandya's exit, the Titans had a void in their squad as they lost a crucial middle-order batter and a quality bowler who could deliver in nearly every stage of play. Then Gujarat were left without the lynchpin of their bowling attack, Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami, who won the Purple cap in the 2023 season. Without these vital players, GT seemed out of their depth for the majority of the season and struggled to stitch up wins.
