Fifteen-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi produced a good bowling spell for East Zone in the Duleep Trophy quarter-final against North East Zone at the BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground 2. The left-arm spinner claimed two wickets in four balls during North East Zone’s second innings on Tuesday. Captain Ishan Kishan introduced Sooryavanshi in the 28th over after the visitors had followed on. On the second ball he picked up a wicket. It was a length ball outside off that tempted Kishan Lyngdoh to step out. The batter lost shape and sent a leading edge to cover, where substitute Denish Das held a clean catch. Three balls later, Sooryavanshi pitched a good-length delivery around off stump.

Imliwati Lemtur defended and edged behind as Kishan completed a sharp catch. The double wicket over left the North East Zone struggling at 79 for 7. This was also Sooryavanshi’s first wicket in first class cricket. BCCI Domestic shared the video, which has gone viral. The teenager also took two excellent catches in the field. He failed with the bat on the opening day scoring just eight runs but has made an impact on the match with his bowling and fielding.

East Zone Beat North East Zone by an Innings and 210 runs

East Zone dominated the match after posting a massive first-innings total of 467. Sooryavanshi failed with the bat on his Duleep Trophy debut. Opening the innings as vice-captain, the left-hander faced Bishworjit Konthoujam in the second over. He smashed consecutive boundaries before he was dismissed with a back-of-a-length delivery outside off induced a drive. The edge flew to gully, where Joseph Lalthankhuma completed the catch. Sooryavanshi departed for 8 off 6 balls. Abhimanyu Easwaran and Ishan Kishan also fell cheaply early. Sudip Kumar Gharami scored 146 and Shahbaz Ahmed scored a career-best 167 as they recovered from early wickets.

North East Zone were bowled out for 111 in reply, with Abhijit Sarkar taking 5 for 20 and Shahbaz claiming three wickets. East Zone enforced the follow-on with a 356-run lead. On Day 3, North East Zone struggled again in their second innings as they were bowled out for 146. Anukul Roy was the pick of the bowlers picking up five wickets while Sooryavanshi picked up two wickets. East Zone won the match comprehensively by an innings and 210 runs. It was a dominant effort by them and they have completely outplayed the opposition.
