Indian batter Yashasvi Jaiswal is not the type of cricketer who stays quiet when things get heated on the field. The India opener plays with plenty of emotion and that has turned into sledges with opponents. There have been times when he has started the banter, while on other occasions, a few words from the opposition have been enough to get a reaction out of him. Some of these moments have been nothing more than the usual Test-match sledging while others have gone a little further. Jaiswal has had clashes with senior players, experienced fast bowlers and even Australia's teenage sensation Sam Konstas.
Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 5 Most Heated On-Field Clashes
Yashasvi Jaiswal was involved in another confrontation with Sri Lanka's Asitha Fernando in Colombo on Day 1 of the second Test. The fight went to another level and eventually resulted in both players being punished by the ICC. After getting dismissed by Asitha, the bowler had a few words to say and in reply, the Indian opener confronted him. This became a talking point during the second Test between India and Sri Lanka. This is not the first time that the left hander has been involved in an altercation on the field.
Here are five of the most heated on field incidents involving Jaiswal.
1. Yashasvi Jaiswal vs Ajinkya Rahane (2022)
A year before Jaiswal became a regular in India's Test side, he found himself at the centre of a controversy during the 2022 Duleep Trophy. Playing for West Zone, the young batter was repeatedly involved in sledging South Zone's batters. At one point, things became too much for captain Ajinkya Rahane who asked Jaiswal to leave the field. It was a strange scene that went viral. Rahane was leading his side in a major domestic game, but he had to send one of his own players off because of his behaviour.
The episode also became one of the early reminders that Jaiswal's competitive streak can sometimes boil over. After a few years, Rahane told the reason why he took the decision, he said that had he not sent Jaiswal off the field, the left hander could have been banned for four matches.
2. Yashasvi Jaiswal vs Ben Stokes (2025)
Jaiswal and Ben Stokes had a proper Test-match exchange at Edgbaston in 2025. The moment came after Jaiswal took a quick single off Ben Stokes. The England captain appeared to have something to say, but Jaiswal was not interested in backing away. He replied, “You don't want to hear from me, come on.”
There was no immediate reaction, but the contest remained interesting for the next few overs. Stokes eventually got his chance when Jaiswal chased a ball outside off and edged behind for 87. The England captain celebrated the wicket with plenty of aggression, giving the impression that the earlier exchange had not been forgotten.
3. Yashasvi Jaiswal vs Sam Konstas
The incident between Jaiswal and Sam Konstas happened during India's tour of Australia. Konstas was making his debut in international career, but he had no problem giving it back to the Indian opener. At one point, Jaiswal was heard telling him to “shut up” and “do your job”. The banter continued later in Sydney, where Jaiswal spotted Konstas struggling for fluency and cheekily asked, “Oye Konstas, shot nahi lag raha kya?” The Indian opener then had another memorable involvement when he took the catch that dismissed Konstas.
4. Yashasvi Jaiswal vs Mitchell Starc
The Starc-Jaiswal banter in Perth is probably the most famous example of the youngster taking on one of the world's quickest bowlers. After playing Starc successfully, Jaiswal was heard telling him that the ball was coming “too slow”. Starc later said he had not even heard the comment at the time. Jaiswal then went on to score a brilliant 161 in that Test, making the remark even more memorable. But Starc got his opportunity in the following Test in Adelaide. Jaiswal walked out to face him and was trapped LBW by the very first delivery.
5. Yashasvi Jaiswal vs Asitha Fernando
The latest incident is also the one that went furthest. During the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo, Jaiswal had been attacking Asitha Fernando and struck the pacer for three boundaries in the over. Fernando then had his revenge as he knocked over Jaiswal for 45 off 53 balls. What followed was far more heated than the usual wicket celebration. Fernando gave Jaiswal an animated send-off and the Indian batter immediately turned around and confronted him. The two came face-to-face and made physical contact before teammates stepped in and separated them. Jaiswal later suggested that people should not judge the incident without knowing what Fernando had said to him. The ICC has fined both players 25% of their match fees and handed them one demerit point each for inappropriate physical contact.
