Pakistan Super League is undoubtedly one of the most famous T20 Leagues across the globe now, alongside Indian Premier League and Big Bash League. The tournament has grown from strength to strength since its inception in 2016. Apart from some incredible domestic talent which PSL has produced, it has also attracted a lot of big overseas stars over the years.
But despite the success that some of them have had in international cricket and various other leagues around the globe, PSL proved out to be a tough nut to crack. Here is a list of 5 foreign players who failed to live up to the expectations and can be termed as 'flops' in Pakistan's marquee T20 League.
Chadwick Walton
The opening batsman from Jamaica has been rated very highly because of his exploits in T20 leagues across the globe. Known for his power hitting, Chadwick Walton was never the same player in PSL. He played for Islamabad United and Karachi Kings from 2018 to 2021 but failed to make an impact which was expected from him. In 27 matches, he only amassed 451 runs at an extremely disappointing average of 21.47. As a result of his inconsistency, the Kings released Walton after the end of the previous edition of the tournament.
Chris Gayle
The Universe Boss is one of the most explosive batsmen that the sport of cricket has ever seen. Chris Gayle has broken numerous records especially in T20 format where has always been a nightmare for the bowlers. But PSL hasn't turned out to be the same for him! Between 2016 to 2021, the left-handed batsman could only register 370 runs in 16 matches at a below-par average of only 23.12, while playing for Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars and Quetta Gladiators. For someone of Gayle's class and stature, his returns in PSL have been indeed quite disappointing.
Dwayne Bravo
The most successful all-rounder in the history of T20 cricket - Dwayne Bravo - surprisingly had a rather tough time during PSL. For someone who has been a formidable force for CSK and the national side, he had very poor returns in Pakistan's marquee T20 league. In 14 matches, he only had 11 wickets to his name which is way below his usually high standards. While his bowling stats are slightly below-average, his batting stats just sums up his troubles in the tournament. Brendon McCullum
The former Kiwi is widely known for his scintillating knock of 158* in the opening game of IPL. Brendon McCullum had a fairly successful career in the tournament and even in international cricket. However, he could only repeat his heroics in Pakistan Super League. While playing for Lahore Qalandars in 2017 and 2018, the right-handed batsman could only score 311 runs in 18 matches at a poor average of 20.73. Shockingly, McCullum's strike rate was only 114.33 which is a clear reflection that he never really found his groove in the tournament.
Andre Russell
The West Indies cricketer is considered as one of the best players in short format, because of his incredible ability to contribute for his side in all departments of the game. Andre Russell has been a phenomenal player for KKR and West Indies but his stats in PSL don't really do justice to his talent. Although he has managed to take 21 wickets in 19 matches, his economy of 8.72 is slightly worrying. But it is his batting that has been a major disappointment. Russell has managed to score only 173 runs at an astonishingly poor average of 11.53 which just highlights his struggles in the tournament.
