2022/08/5-Players-to-miss-a-place-in-Asia-Cup-squad-sportstiger.jpg

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to announce the India squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2022 in the next week. This year’s edition of the Asia Cup holds special importance as it can be considered a dress rehearsal for the upcoming T20 World Cup held in Australia.

Hence the BCCI would want to create a squad which would have a majority of players who are in contention for the World Cup. Similarly, the board would also want players like KL Rahul and Deepak Chahar, who are set to return to the Indian team, to get some game time as they are coming after a long injury-led absence.

But because of these reasons, some players who have been performing well in the recent few India tours may not be picked in the Asia Cup squad. These players may have given some great games but still would not be picked for the T20 tournament. So let us look at a list of around five players who may not be selected in the India Asia Cup squad despite some great performances in the recent few games.

1. Shubman Gill

The Chandigarh-born batter burst onto the scene after a dominant performance on the U19 level. Ever since then, he has been finding his feet on the international circuit. He has shown some incredible promise but hasn’t portrayed consistency. Similarly, he was picked up in the recent West Indies tour where he scored 205 runs in the three ODI games. But with the likes of Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, etc., Gill would find it difficult to be picked for the 2022 Asia Cup.

2. Shardul Thakur

The Mumbai-based pacer took his own sweet time making it big on the international stage after years of top-notch performances on the domestic circuit. But when he made his India debut, Thakur showed off his all-around skill with great performances around the world. Similarly in the ongoing Windies tour, he picked up seven wickets in the three ODIs. Like Gill’s case, Thakur may not be picked because of the abundance of young and experienced fast bowlers.

3. Sanju Samson

The Sanju Samson and Indian team affair continues as the Rajasthan Royals captain may not get a chance to play in the Asia Cup. Over the last few years, we have seen Samson make it to the India team with quality performances but for some odd reason, isn’t given ample opportunity to grow as a player on the international level. Similarly, he has been given scarce chances in 2022 where he has put on some good performances. But with Rishabh Pant, Dinesh Karthik and KL Rahul returning, he may not find a spot in the Asia Cup squad.

4. Ravi Bishnoi

The 21-year-old from Jodhpur has been one of the newest stars in the Indian circuit. Bishnoi also had an incredible IPL 2022 where he picked up 13 wickets. Similarly, he has also performed well at the international level in the limited opportunities he has received. But with pure spinners in R Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal returning and all-rounders like Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, Bishnoi may not find a spot in the Asia Cup 2022 squad.

5. Kuldeep Yadav/ Ishan Kishan

These two players have been included together as they have had some good games but still have failed to make a mark in the international circuit. Kuldeep Yadav had great IPL and similarly found his way in the South Africa home tour were he picked some crucial wickets but hasn’t made a ‘you need to pick me’ performance so far. Similarly, Ishan Kishan had a few sparks of brilliance but hasn't been consistent at all. Hence, despite showing promise these two players may not be picked in the Indian Asia Cup squad.
