In a historic feat, the Afghanistan cricket team have qualified for the ICC Champions Trophy for the first time in their sporting history, with the tournament set to be played in 2025 in Pakistan. Their qualification was confirmed after Bangladesh defeated Sri Lanka by three wickets in the ODI World Cup 2023 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Monday, November 6.
The ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 campaign for Afghanistan has been nothing short of extraordinary, winning four matches out of seven thus far, in comparison to 2019, when they failed to win anything in nine matches. In the last couple of weeks, Afghanistan have beaten three former world champions, namely England, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan, while giving themselves a fighting chance to make the semi final of the ongoing flagship tournament.

On Tuesday, November 7, Afghanistan are scheduled to take on Australia in an all-important ODI World Cup 2023 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. A win against the five time world champions will most likely secure them a place in the semi final of the CWC 2023, which will be one of the greatest cricketing achievements of all time.
Irrespective of the result in today’s game, Afghanistan will play against South Africa in their final round robin match of the ODI World Cup 2023 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Friday, November 10. Moreover, the consistent performances from the batting and bowling department of Afghanistan indicates that they have a legitimate chance to keep New Zealand and Pakistan behind in the race for the knockout spot in the CWC 2023.
