Former Pakistan cricketer Ahmed Shehzad heavily criticised the Pakistan national team after a disastrous first T20I defeat to New Zealand on Sunday, March 16, at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch. The Pakistan opener took a dig at Pakistan’s bowling attack and all-rounder Shadab Khan specifically after the loss. After opting to field first, the New Zealand's bowling attack quickly dismantled Pakistan's top order, reducing them to 11 for 4 within the first five overs.
Pacer Kyle Jamieson delivered a remarkable performance, claiming three wickets for just eight runs in his four-over spell. Jacob Duffy was equally effective, taking four wickets for 14 runs. Khushdil Shah was the only Pakistani batter to put up a decent tally, scoring 32 runs. Pakistan was ultimately bowled out for a mere 91 runs, marking their lowest T20I total in New Zealand.
In the second innings, New Zealand chased down the target comfortably, reaching 92 for one in just 10.1 overs. Tim Seifert led the run-chase with a brisk 44 off 29 balls, while Finn Allen contributed an unbeaten 29. Ahmed Shehzad criticized Pakistan's bowling performance after their T20I loss to New Zealand, questioning why the bowlers failed to create pressure. Even after having to defend a low total, Shehzad felt that the bowling unit did not give their best.
Ahmed Shehzad slams PCB over selection of Shadab Khan
Ahmed Shehzad also questioned Shadab Khan’s inclusion in the squad, suggesting it might be influenced by PCB’s favoritism rather than performance. Shehzad also raised concerns about the National Cricket Academy (NCA), arguing that it has failed to produce quality players. He urged for a reassessment of Pakistan’s team selections and development strategies.
All of this comes after the selectors decided to drop Mohammed Rizwan and Babar Azam from the T20I squad following a disastrous Champions Trophy campaign, and added some new faces to the team in hope of a revamp. The PCB will look to back its decisions with better results in the upcoming matches. This comprehensive win gives New Zealand a 1-0 lead in this series, with the next match scheduled to take place in Dunedin on Tuesday.
