India’s legendary long jumper Anju Bobby George took to social media to raise concerns after the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) named Sharath Kamal as the flag bearer for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics. The 2024 edition of the Summer Olympics will take place from July 26 to August 11 in the French capital, Paris.
Coming back to the concern raised by the Vice President of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) and the former long jumper, Anju Bobby George has raised questions on why did the organisation not go with the ‘Golden Boy’ Neeraj Chopra. Expressing her disappointment on it, the former athlete captioned her post on Instagram, “Surprisingly, the Indian Olympic Association did not consider our golden boy Neeraj Chopra as a flag bearer for the 2024 Olympic Games …???? ultimately its Neeraj’s choice based on his own assessment of the situation … still.. Why???”
In her caption, she also tagged eminent personalities and officials associated with the sports arena in India. While she addressed this tagging the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, along with Kiren Rijiju, Anurag Thakur, among others.
Sharath Kamal named India’s flag bearer for Paris 2024; Mary Kom named Chef de Mission
The Indian Olympic Association, earlier in March 2024 named Indian table tennis veteran Achanta Sharath Kamal as the flag bearer for the upcoming Paris Olympics. Moreover, the IOA also named MC Mary Kom as the Chef de Mission for the Summer Olympics with Shiva Keshavan being appointed as Mary Kom’s deputy.
It is to be noted that Mary Kom and former India hockey captain Manpreet Singh were India’s flag bearers at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Moreover, Lovlina Borgohain and the current hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh led the India’s contingent at the Asian Games last year in Hangzhou, China.
