It is now being reported that Arsenal has no intentions of offering a contract extension to their out-of-favour defensive midfielder Jorginho. The 33-year-old Italian joined the Gunners in January 2023 on a 18-month deal from local rivals Chelsea and will become a free agent at the end of the ongoing season. Jorginho has fallen down the ranks after the arrival of Declan Rice, who has occupied the defensive midfield position for most parts of the current season. Furthermore, Jorginho has also faced competition from Thomas Partey who occupies the same position in midfield.
Jorginho has not seen consistent game-time this season as well, having played only 14 Premier League games and coming off the bench on most occasions. Given all this and his growing age, the midfielder will be expected to find new suitors soon. Brazilian club Flamengo is believed to be interested in acquiring Jorginho’s services and has already sent a proposal for a free transfer. On the other hand, while Saudi remains to be the hottest destination for out-of-favour European footballers in recent times, Neom FC from the Saudi Pro League, who was once linked to the player has not had any further talks regarding a transfer.
Jorginho to miss upcoming Crystal Palace fixture due to rib injury
Arsenal is set to place Crystal Palace on April 23 at the Emirates Stadium in the 34th match of the 2024-25 Premier League season. The match will however only serve as consolation as Liverpool look well on their way to win the title with a significant points gap between them and Arsenal. Nevertheless, Mikel Arteta has issued some updates about the fitness of certain players before this tie.
One main concern for Arsenal fans remains to be Bukayo Saka, who recently came back from a long-term injury and picked up another knock in Arsenal’s recent 4-0 win against Ipswich Town. Areta has however clarified that it is not a major concern and Saka should be available for the Crystal Palace encounter. Jorginho remains to be out with a rib injury in one of the recent matches along with Ricardo Calafiori, who is also sidelined for this one.
