On the final day of the Asian Athletics Championships, Priyanka Goswami and Vikash Singh brought home silver and bronze medals in the women’s and men’s 20 km race walk events respectively. Goswami recorded a time of 1:34:24 and Singh completed the event in 1:29:32. While the podium finish is a silver lining, Goswami will be disappointed to fall well short of her personal best record of 1:28:45.
Bhawna Jat, who also competed in the event, finished fifth with a time of 1:38:26. For the men’s section, national champion Akshdeep Singh was disqualified by judges. Despite winning bronze, Vikash Singh also fell short of his personal best time, which is 1:20:05. Both of the athletes, Goswami and Singh, have managed to qualify for the World Championships in Budapest (17-29 August) as well as the 2024 Paris Olympics.
India wins seven silvers and three bronze medals on final day
The final day of the Championships saw India’s contingent bring home no less than seven silver medals. The full list of silver medal winners includes Jyothi Yarraji (women’s 200m final), Manu DP (men’s javelin throw final), Abha Katua (women’s shot put final), Parul Choudhary (women’s 5000m final), KM Chanda (women’s 800m final), Krishnan Kumar (men’s 800m final) and Priyanka Goswami (women’s 20km racewalk).
The list of bronze medalists includes Vikash Singh (men’s 20km racewalk), Ankita (women’s 5000m final), and Manpreet Kaur (women’s shot put final).
Other athletes that competed but did not win includes, Mohammed Asfal (7th, men’s 800m final), Lavika Sharma (Did not finish, women’s 800m final), Akshdeep Singh (Disqualified, men’s 20km racewalk), Bhawna jat (5th, women’s 20km racewalk).
