Indian athlete Vithya Ramraj equalled legend PT Usha’s 39-year-old national record on Monday, 2 October. The 25-year-old tied with PT Usha’s record as she qualified for the final of the women’s 400m hurdles at the ongoing Games in Hangzhou in China.

The 25-year-old Indian athlete finished at the top of her Heat 1 and second overall, setting her personal best timing of 55.42 seconds to enter the final along with other four. Notably with Vithya, other Indian athletes including Jesse Sandesh, Mohammed Afsal and Krishnan Kumar also qualified for the medal round in their respective events.

While Jesse Sandesh and Anil Sarvesh Kushare managed to seal a berth in the final round with a jump of 2.10m. Jesse finished sixth in Group A, Anil finished fourth in Group B, to be among the top 12 qualifiers. On the other hand, Mohammed Afsal and Krishna Kumar advanced into the final, clocking 1:46.79 minutes and 1:49.45 minutes respectively in their heats.

The Indian contingent has earned 12 medals so far in athletics at the Asian Games, which include two gold, five silver and five bronze. At the time of writing, India was placed fourth in the medal tally with a total of 56 medals (13 gold, 21 silver and 22 bronze).
