Shaili Singh, one of the most accomplished track and field athletes of India, got teared up after finishing fifth in the women’s long jump final at the Asian Games 2023. The 19-year-old was unable to deliver her personal best inside the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Stadium, which led to a disappointing end to her campaign at the Asiad on October 2, Monday.

The gold medal of the women’s long jump went to Shiqi Xiong of China, who gave her personal best of 6.73m when it mattered the most. Ancy Sojan Edappily of India secured a silver medal with her personal best of 6.63m, while the bronze medal went to Nga Yan from Hong Kong, China, who registered her personal best of 6.50m too.
After her long jump of 6.48m, which could add up to a fifth place finish in the competition, Shaili Singh talked to the media about how she couldn’t perform at her best in Hangzhou. In her emotional chat with the journalists, she was quoted as saying, “Isme aapko guarantee deti hu ki next jitne bhi competition hai usme apna best dungi (I am giving you a guarantee, I will give my best in the next set of competitions).”

Notably, the season’s best for Shaili Singh is 6.76m in women’s long jump, which could have fetched her a gold medal at the Asian Games 2023. But, for Team India’s sake, Ancy Sojan Edappily kept the country’s flag held high in this event, bringing home the silver medal for the country.
