The Indian athletics contingent claimed their first medal at the ongoing Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, China. Shot putter Kiran Baliyan on Friday, 29 September etched history as she clinched India’s first-ever medal in women’s shot put event.

The Indian shot-putter won India’s first medal at the Games in 72 years with her best throw of 17.36m. The Indian athlete started with a throw of 15.42m on her first attempt which had put her in the fourth place. However, she rose up to third place with her best of 16.48m coming in her second attempt. At this point, compatriot Manpreet Kaur stood at fourth place with her best throw of 16.25m.
As things progressed, Kiran Baliyan maintained her stronghold at the third place, bettering her throw with 17.36m, meanwhile Manpreet continued at fourth place with 16.25m. However, things put at end here a Kiran claimed the first-ever for India at the Games with Manpreet finishing at fifth place.
It is to be noted that India last won a medal in shot put at the Games in 1951 with Barbara Webster’s bronze.
