Atletico Madrid are reportedly exploring the possibility of bringing back Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey, who is approaching the final year of his contract with Arsenal, set to expire in June 2025. The 31-year-old, who previously made 188 appearances under Diego Simeone during a seven-year stint at Atletico, has seen his role at Arsenal diminish following the arrivals of Declan Rice and Mikel Merino. Partey's tenure at Arsenal has been marred by injuries, including a significant hamstring issue that sidelined him for much of the 2023–24 season.

However, he has shown glimpses of his former prowess, notably scoring in the latest 1-1 draw against Brentford, and delivering a standout performance in Arsenal's 3–0 win against Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-final first leg. Atletico Madrid have struggled to find a consistent replacement for Partey since his departure in 2020, experimenting with various players in the defensive midfield role without success. Simeone's interest in reuniting with Partey is fuelled by the player's familiarity with Atletico's system and his potential to bring stability to the midfield.

Arteta confirms Partey’s availability against Real Madrid

Arsenal is set to face Real Madrid in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. The Gunners hold a commanding 3–0 lead from the first leg, with goals from Declan Rice and Mikel Merino. Despite the advantage, Arsenal will be cautious, especially considering Real Madrid's history of dramatic comebacks in the competition.

Injury concerns loom over both teams. Arsenal is without key players such as Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz while Thomas Partey has been cleared to play today as reported by Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta. Real Madrid will be missing Eduardo Camavinga due to suspension, along with injuries to Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao.
