Glenn Maxwell is likely to miss the series against India later this month after he sustained a calf injury in order to be fully fit for the ODI World Cup. The all-rounder could not take part in the T20 series in South Africa despite being there because of soreness in his left ankle. Last year, Glenn Maxwell suffered a broken left fibula in a horrific mishap during a friend's birthday party, for which he required urgent surgery and an extended rehabilitation period.

Maxwell during his recent interaction said that he will have to be careful with his preparation if he is to properly compete at the World Cup. He mentioned that he wants to play some part in the series but will prioritize the World Cup and take it slow.

"I still want to play some part of that India series, but I'm not feeling any pressure on it. The selectors and the staff have been brilliant with me as well. They don't want to put too much pressure on me to sort of set that date because they know they've got a bit of extra time before the World Cup. So instead of rushing it and probably putting myself a week or two behind, being able to give myself extra time and make sure we get through the whole tournament," Glenn Maxwell was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

On Monday, September 4, the 34-year-old will meet with a representative from Cricket Australia's medical department to talk more about his fitness. He also stated that the injury was unexpected and that one of the tendons around his ankle was a little bit inflamed, leading to some swelling.

Australia will face India for three ODIs from September 22-27 before the all important World Cup in India in October-November. The Australians are considered favorites for the tournament but are currently going through a minor injury crisis with many of their primary players injured.

Pat Cummins, Steve Smith, and Mitchell Starc were ruled out of Australia's white-ball tour of South Africa with injuries but are expected to come back at the World Cup. Smith is recovering from a tendon injury to his left wrist, while Starc was said to be experiencing "groin soreness" since returning after the 2023 Ashes in England. Cummins is expected to play some part in the ongoing tour in South Africa.
