Seasoned Indian athlete and current Asian champion in the 3,000m steeplechase, Avinash Sable took a nasty fall during the water jump just over a minute into his run at the Stade Louis II Stadium on Friday, July 11. After the fall he was seen clutching his lower thigh area just at the back of his knee forcing his withdrawal. His coach hinted towards Sable being out of action for one or two weeks, but reportedly he will head to a specialist soon.
According to the reports, Avinash Sable may miss the World Athletics Championships 2025 in Tokyo later this year. The speculation regarding the Asian champion missing the event could be a big setback for the Indian contingent. Reportedly, his initial diagnosis suggests an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tear, which may take at least six months to recover, depending on the gravity of the injury. He was supposed to go to Colorado Springs, USA to train along with Indian long-distance runner Gulveer Singh and fellow steeplechaser Parul Chaudhary to train for the upcoming tournaments.
Avinash Sable will have a good time to recover for Commonwealth Games and Asian Games next year
With two mega events slated for the next year, Avinash Sable and his team would hope to get the injury healed as early as possible. With the Commonwealth Games scheduled for July-August next year and Asian Games in September, Sable will have a good time to recover. In the Monaco Diamond League, he intended to find that momentum for the Tokyo World Championships to keep the hopes of Diamond League finals alive. But in the race, the athlete ahead of him lost balance and went down, causing Avinash to fall as well.
Sable was unable to put weight on his leg and was helped away, before being taken to a local medical centre for further assessment. Moreover, he is going through a rough patch this year as he couldn’t finish the Monaco Diamond League, he finished 13th in the Xiamen Diamond League on April 16 and was eighth in Keqiao. With just one point from three meetings this season, it will be difficult for the 30-year-old to make it to the finals, set to be held on August 27-28 in Zurich, Switzerland.
