The representatives of Marcus Rashford, the Manchester United winger, met with Barcelona officials in Lisbon for a potential move to the Catalan giants in the ongoing January transfer window. The meeting was held between both sides ahead of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) 2024-25 match for Barcelona against Benfica, and it has huge ramifications especially when Marcus Rashford’s preferred destination away from Manchester United is Barcelona.
Notably, since the arrival of Ruben Amorim as the head coach of Manchester United, Marcus Rashford has been mostly sidelined from the matchday squads due to the drop of performance standards set for him in the practice sessions. It had led to increased speculation about Marcus Rashford potentially leaving his boyhood club, and while the 27-year-old hasn’t publicly opened up about his intentions, there is a chance of him leaving Manchester as early as this month.
Barcelona have to create funds for Marcus Rashford’s salary by letting some players go
As per the report from Sky Sports, Barcelona have to create funds for Marcus Rashford’s salary by letting some players go, but it will be far from easy since they are currently dealing with the issue of Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules. Ansu Fati and Eric Garcia have been rumoured to leave Barcelona in the ongoing January transfer window, but as of right now, Fati is reportedly reluctant to leave despite limited game time, while Garcia got a chance to prove himself in the UCL game, which Barcelona won 5-4 against Benfica.
While Barcelona are yet to make a formal bid for Marcus Rashford, there are a few teams interested in landing Marcus Rashford on a loan deal, but the salary of the Manchester United star remains a big issue. Borussia Dortmund have made an enquiry about a loan move for the Englishman, but they need Manchester United to cover a substantial percentage of his salary for the player transfer to happen.
In the meantime, Ruben Amorim has put the onus on Marcus Rashford to fight his way back into the Manchester United matchday squad.
