After the International Cricket Council (ICC) had informed all cricket boards to submit their provisional squad for the upcoming ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 by January 12, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to delay the announcement. The update comes just hours before the final date, set by the ICC.
As per the guidelines of the ICC, all participating teams are required to submit a provisional squad at least a month prior, with the liberty to make changes later. However, this time around, the ICC has requested the squads from all eight teams to be submitted five weeks prior to the start of the tournament.
BCCI likely to delay squad announcement for ICC Champions Trophy 2025
But according to reports citing Cricbuzz, the BCCI has cited recent commitments in Australia for the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series and requested for more time. “While it was initially expected that the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee would reveal the squad for the ICC tournament by January 12, adhering to the guidelines of the International Cricket Council (ICC), they are now likely to request for an extension,” the report said.
It is to be noted that prior to the ICC Champions Trophy, Team India is set to play England in a white-ball series at home, starting from January 22. While the side will play five T20Is, they will then lock horns in three-match ODI series, scheduled from February 6. Moreover, the ODI squad of the ODI series will be more or less same as Champions Trophy and thus the BCCI has requested the deadline to be January 19.
Speaking of India’s Champions Trophy 2025 campaign, they have been placed in Group A alongside Bangladesh, New Zealand and Pakistan. They will kickstart their campaign in a match against Bangladesh on February 20, followed by the much-awaited clash against Pakistan (February 23) and New Zealand (March 2).
