February 13, 2023, will go down in history as the WPL 2023 auction will kick off the groundbreaking journey of women's cricket. Ahead of the mega auction, BCCI President Roger Binny, secretary Jay Shah, and treasurer Arun Dhuman unveiled the WPL logo. Roger Binny then expressed his excitement over the start of WPL and talked about how it will change women's cricket.

“It is a landmark moment today. Bright young talents will be rubbing shoulders with some of the biggest superstars in world cricket. We at the BCCI believe that the WPL is going to change the landscape of the game forever. Interest that women's cricket has garnered is overwhelming. Hope the players are going to go under the hammer are as excited as us. There will be domestic players as well who will be hoping to make a mark for their franchise and eventually for their countries as well. We have seen unheard talents becoming household names in the men's league. Hopefully, that is what happens in the WPL as well”, Binny said.

409 players will be part of the inaugural WPL auction out of which 246 are Indians and 163 overseas players and eight players from the associate nations. The players will be segregated into seven sets - marquee players, batters, all-rounders, wicketkeepers, fast bowlers, spin bowlers, and emerging players.

These 490 players are included in five different slabs of base prices - INR 50 lakh, INR 40 lakh, INR 30 lakh, INR 20 lakh, and INR 10 lakh. The top bracket will have  24 players while thirty players have enrolled in the INR 40 lakh base price bracket.

The auction will go ahead with a margin of INR 5 lakh as the bid reaches bids INR 1 crore. Then between bids from INR 1 crore to INR 2 crore, the increments will be INR 10 lakh. The next bracket INR 2 crore to INR 3 crore will see an increment of INR 20 lakh. After INR 3 crore the increments will be based on the auctioneer's discretion but will remain under INR 20 lakh.
